Costumes

The Society encourages members to wear ‘Pioneer’ costume.

A valid Newick Bonfire Society badge must be worn in all processions.

First Pioneer Costume:

Cavalier: Stylised 17th century dress based on the royalist costume of the English Civil War

Second Pioneer Costume:

Parisienne from La Moulin Rouge (ie Edwardian trollops!)

Third Pioneer Costume: (new 2024)

Britain at War 1940s: Home guard, land girl, evacuee for children

Smuggler

The “Smuggler” is a popular choice but traditionally Newick regards it as a ‘working’ costume.

A Newick Smuggler costume must consist of:

▪ A red and black hooped knitted guernsey (not a rugby shirt)

▪ White long trousers

 ▪ A red neckerchief

▪ A black waist sash or black belt

 ▪ A red and black hooped elongated woollen hat or bowler or top hat.

 ▪ A small dark coloured shoulder bag may be worn if desired, but rucksacks are not permitted.

 • Take care to select costume materials that are fire resistant. Avoid synthetic fabrics which burn easily.

Knitting a Newick Bonfire Society Smuggler Jumper

You can use any pattern for a round necked jumper. Most people choose
drop sleeves. Its a good idea to knit it at least a size larger than normal so it
can be worn over another jumper in cold weather.

All the ribbing should be black and then stripes of 20 rows bright red and
20 rows black.

The front and back should be lengthened by an extra two or more stripes so
it can be worn tunic style with a sash.
