Photographic Competition 2006

Each year we are lucky enough to be provided with a wonderful display of tradition, in the form of Newick Bonfire Celebrations. This year was no exception. The processions, costumes and smell of the burning torches create a fantastic atmosphere. The display itself was magnificent. Although we had almost the perfect weather for the evening, the display would have amounted to just a lot of light and noise without the thought, care and choreography behind it.

It was with this backdrop that the Bonfire Society launched their photographic competition, and what a pleasure it was judging it. Although entries from only one of the competition categories were available, the wonderful array of images from this year's event helped to pass an enjoyable few hours.

Of the 50 images, or thereabouts, the majority of pictures, merited viewing, a testament to the ability of all the contributors. However, as only one image was allowed to win, the ruthless task of thinning out the entries began; and to cut a long story short, the winning, Highly Commended and Commended images are displayed here in pride of place, amongst all the entries.

The quality of the final images is clearly evident, with the majority having been presented by just two, clearly talented, photographers (discovered only after judging was complete).

I was surprised at the limited number of photographs of the aerial display, but the best of those presented is Commended, as are "Liz Duncton", "The Old Bill" and "Rotherfield". All pleasant viewing and technically sound.

Deciding between the final four was a little more difficult. "Fireside with clowns" is, in the humble opinion of the judge, the best image here, if standing alone. It just missed out on the top spot by not being immediately identifiable as connected with this year's Newick celebration. It is Highly Commended as are "The Torch" and "Emptying the torch barrel", the latter being very identifiable as Newick, with the background detail. All three images are delightful. Evocative and technically proficient they were very difficult to separate from the eventual winner.

Finally, the winning image. Very Newick, Full of atmosphere, everyone clearly enjoying themselves. Looking at this image, one can almost hear the noise of the evening coming back. This delightful image, taken without flash, helping it to stand out from other similar images taken with, has just enough movement combined with sufficient detail to add bags of atmosphere and life. This style of image is not easy to achieve and this is a good example of type.

My congratulations to the photographers.
